The first time I ever had Korean beef or bulgogi was at a Korean BBQ restaurant near our house. I am someone who is more than willing to try anything new, but I was a little overwhelmed looking at thee menu because I had no idea what to try. I did try some of Brian’s kimchee
, which was pretty good, but my dream on a hot plate came out in the form of deliciously seasoned beef. The bulgogi was placed in front of me and I devoured it!
I have to clarify – this isn’t just Korean Beef – this is CHEAP Korean beef. Usually Korean beef (or bulgogi) is made with flank steak and is absolutely amazing. This is made with ground beef and is a perfect snack or meal. My friend Gina recommended I try a recipe we found on Pinterest after she made it and said her husband went back for thirds! So I decided to give it a shot and I am SO glad I did! This was one of those recipes I wouldn’t try to alter at all…it was just perfect!
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef (leanest you can find – I used 93% lean)
1/4 – 1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of soy sauce
1 Tablespoon of sesame oil
3 cloves garlic, grated
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
1/2 – 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper (optional, depending on desired spice)
Salt and pepper
Green onions, sliced
Directions
1. Season the beef with salt and pepper and brown it with the sesame oil and garlic. Drain extra fat from the beef and put back in the pan.
2. Mix in the brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, and peppers. Cook until completed combined and top with sliced green onions.
The green onions are extremely important! They can make or break the dish. This can be served over steamed rice or like I did…directly from the pan. ;)
